There you go with the coin thing again. [Says the man that actually had been practicing the coin thing in secret because it looked fun and he'd watched Connor do it.]
I'm just going to park on Skidmore. It's a full street away but it's easier to get back on the highway from there. We'll just walk over.
[Then he turns to Connor, leaning his arm against the back of his seat. The camera pans in to observe the close range.] If anything happens, remember, strictly non-lethal. If someone's armed or threatens us, stay behind me. [He doesn't realize how up in Connor's space he's getting. Just that he's worried, and he's trying to be discrete because he doesn't want Connor bleeding blue on camera.]
[Damn, Connor is good at those big brown eyes. They can just melt him on cue. And Hank's husky blue ones trail over Connor's face. He realizes, maybe, that he can't really remind Connor that he can't heal at the moment. Which Connor of course knows. But to Hank, he's survived bullets and stabbings. There won't be any spare parts for Connor.]
[Not unless they find the right help, that is.]
[With a puff of his cheeks and a grim raspberry noise, Hank relents.] Come on. [And he gets out to shuffle down the sidewalk towards the corner.]
[The houses here aren't great. The camera follows and takes in flaking paint and quite a few overgrown and/or garbage littered lawns. The nicest ones have bars on the windows. And the cameraman finally gives them space, relying on zoom, as they go up to the door and ask to come in.]
[The girl who answers can't be more than twenty-three, too skinny, has trackmarks that suggest she's been into some rough stuff. And she's obviously very nervous as she's peeking out.]
[Connor feels a tension between them as they stare at each other, and then it’s gone and Hank is getting out of the car. Connor follows, adjusting his shirt. When the woman answers the door he gives her a smile.]
Hello, my name is Connor. This is my partner, Hank.
[He’s hoping that offering their names will ease her mind a little.]
Would you mind if we came in? We’d like to speak with you.
I'm sorry. [She says at first.] I uh... I have company at the moment.
[She seems nervous, but Hank can't tell if it's "I don't know what to do about cops" nervous or if it's "I need help" nervous. It is, however, nervous.]
[So he does his level best to look behind her without outright leaning to do so. Letting her distraction with trying to talk to Connor derail her attention. But he can't see anything.]
We just need a moment of your time. We'd heard your ex didn't make it to his hearing. [Hank starts.]
I haven't seen him. [She says, though she seems even more distressed.]
I'm sorry. [Is all she says, wiping her nose before closing the door. The entire behavior is concerning, and without even monitoring vitals Hank can make a pretty good guess that the guy is in there.]
[So he gestures Connor to walk with him, down the sidewalk towards the corner.]
Jesus... she definitely didn't give us enough to go get a warrant. She must have known better than that. But I'm getting the impression that she doesn't want him there.
[And Hank thumbs towards the camera guy.]
She couldn't have missed this guy, either. She might start encouraging him to leave. And if there's a back door, where do you think his most likely getaway routes would be if he thought the front was being watched?
He'll probably want to follow the route with the most cover. There are a lot of back alleys here, but most of them open up onto a main street. There's one that opens up onto a side road though, into a parking lot. If he has a car, it's probably parked there. If not, it's still the best way to go if he doesn't want to be seen.
[Hank smiles a little as he pats Connor's shoulder heavily, the camera panning between the two of them during their discussion. He walks with him in the direction of that parking lot.]
We can't legally break into his vehicle or detain it but we can make it inconvenient for him to leave.
[They're not dressed as policemen, but it's obvious they're going to be waiting for him. As they reach the alleyway entrance Connor motions for Hank to hide with him, and they wait.]
As long as he's not armed when he's not feeling hospitable, I'm fine with that.
[Hank grumbles as he hides with Connor, waiting. Rather than a gun he pulls out a taser, choosing that because, honestly, not being a cop means bigger ramifications for bringing people in.]
[There's going to end up being a break in the editing here, because watching two guys wait is never fun. But the cameraman films anyway, hoping to catch more of those small, friendly, concerned moments before the action. He knows those will be a big hit.]
[Connor does have a moment where he touches Hank's arm encouragingly, giving him a small smile. Soon though the man shows up, and Connor sneaks around and blocks his path back through the alleyway once he's gone far enough. He motions for Hank to use the taser, but the man spots them and starts to flee.]
Shit.
[He mumbles it to himself but it's probably going to be caught on camera, and he starts running after him, hopping clean over the hood of a car in order to catch up quicker. Connor is fast but so is the man he's chasing, obviously used to evading the law.]
[The cameraman follows Connor. As best he can, anyway. There's a stretch where he's just tailing and watching the other two men vault vehicles. In his eagerness to watch Connor's nimble antics, he misses Hank (who adds a FUCK onto that Shit).]
[In their one-way street navigations, Hank takes a lucky guess on where the guy will go, hoping to intercept. He's not as fast as Connor by a long shot, but the exit he's thinking of is a shorter distance away. Maybe the guy will think he's losing them by taking it. And if he can time it right, he can clothesline him.]
[The man does in fact take that route, and ends up running straight into where Hank will be. Connor isn't slowing down and is in fact gaining on him a little, which makes him panic and not look where he's going. The end result being that it'll be easy for Hank to intercept.]
[What the cameraman gets is a shot of Hank in the distance, at the end of Connor's pursuit path, stepping in and catching the guy around the shoulders and bringing him down. The video is blurry, but the guy definitely pulls a knife. So Hank grabs his arm and pins it.]
Drop the fucking knife!
[He orders him, about the time Connor has closed in and the Cameraman is still nearing, the scene wonderfully spotlit by a streetlight. Just what he'd want.]
[Connor sees the knife and although Hank has the situation under control he still feels a pang of panic. He presses his shoe onto the man’s wrist when he gets there, applying pressure until he grunts in pain and opens his hand. Connor kicks the knife away and helps Hank bring the suspect to his feet, cuffing him and starting with him to the car.]
Good work, Hank.
[His eyes had been cold as he’d forced the man to drop the knife, but now he gives Hank a fond smile.]
You know you're not going to be able to ride in the back. [Hank tells the cameraman. Who just comments that he brought money for an uber.]
[Alright, then. Hank gets the guy back to the car with minor struggling and then he decides to do a last moment weapons or lockpick check. It's in his pocket that he finds, of all things, a clean dry tampon.]
[He pulls it out by the string end and glares at it. The guy says-] That was my girlfriends!
[Hank just drawls out a-] I bet it was.
[Then, grimly.] Connor. I think he removed the tampon from the applicator because he needed to use the applicator for something else. [He's got a wincing expression.]
...Honestly just make sure he's restrained, he can fuckin' deal with the local cops and sit on it until we get there 'cause I'm not going to go looking. [He opens the door to the cop car.]
[Connor tilts his head because he's not sure at first what Hank could mean. Then he does a scan of the man and his eyebrows raise.]
Oh.
[Right. That's awkward.]
I'd rather not pull it out either, if I can help it.
[He'll just sit with the guy and make sure he doesn't get any funny ideas. He shoves the guy in, offering up a bland "sorry" when the suspect hits his head on the frame of the car. He doesn't sound sorry at all.]
[Hank winces a little at the loud thonk, but doesn't offer much more sympathy than that. At least it looks like, to the cameraman, that it was an accident rather than something meant.]
So we'll meet you at the police station...
[He says to the guy. So there, the video cuts, the guy waves at them before heading off to wait for his ride. In the meantime, Hank gets in the driver's seat.]
The shitty thing is our money's gonna get filtered through the damn producers. So we're still gonna make a fraction of a fraction. But maybe this can lead to better work or pay raises or fuckin' somethin'.
You could let me go- [the perp offers] -I got friends in high places willing to-
I saw how that girl looked. Like fuck are you going anywhere.
[Connor gives the man a hard stare, unusual for him, and he backs down slightly.]
It has to lead somewhere, Hank. If nothing else, we helped some people today. People remember that sort of thing, don't they?
[As they reach the police station, the man starts pleading again. He even tries to run for it once out of the car, but Connor catches him quickly and shoves him towards the station.]
Yeah, well... I'd rather that money not go towards a big corporation. But the job is fine.
[The job might actually be his last chance to be a cop.]
[After the perp is turned in, they've reported the guy as taken in for when the office opens up tomorrow, Hank takes Connor to a truck-stop diner. Not many food carts like he'd like, definitely none open at night.]
[So the video starts with harsh midnight lighting, near sterile inside of a diner with tiles that look at least twenty years old on the walls. There's a long bar to take orders and booths and stools and the general tacky interior one would expect. Hank's tearing into a club sandwich with a cold can of fucking Canada Dry at his side. They're sitting at a booth because it's easier for their reacquired cameraman to film from here.]
[Between bites Hank informs everyone.] We turned them in. I'm worried about his ex. Thought about calling someone to check in on her but I don't really want anyone to file charges. Seemed like she wasn't all that willing.
[Connor sits beside Hank and watches blandly as he tucks into his sandwich. The camera pans from Hank, to Connor, to the empty space in front of him. Connor notes this, and looks uncomfortable.]
I don't eat on camera. Sorry.
[There are plenty of people with that kind of fear, so it seems to go down as a legitimate excuse.]
You should slow down with that sandwich though, Hank. You'll make yourself feel ill.

I don’t like hiding behind you.
[He’s done it before, but that was when Hank was his superior. Now they’re actually partners. He doesn’t want Hank to get hurt because of him.]
I’ll do it, but if I think you’re going to get hurt I’m stepping in.

[Not that he can feel it, but he can pretend.]
You're not in trouble, you have nothing to fear from us.
